Assembly Directions:
For syrup, mix sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and water in
saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer 5
minutes. Remove from heat and stir in butter. Cool.
For pastry, mix flour and salt. Cut in shortening
until coarse crumbs form. Add cold water a little at
a time, mixing until moistened. Form into a ball.
Roll into 18 x 12 inch rectangle. Cut into 6
squares. Place 3/4 C. chopped apple in center of
each square. Mix sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg
together. Sprinkle a small amount over each fruit
filled square. Moisten edges of pastry. Fold corners
to center atop fruit. Pinch to seal.
Freezing and Cooking Directions:
Apple dumplings may be baked and frozen OR frozen
before baking. Syrup may be frozen separately.
To bake, place 6 dumplings in an 11 x 7
baking pan. Pour syrup over dumplings. Bake at 475
degrees for about 45 minutes or until fruit is
tender and dumplings are brown.
Comments:
*Apple equivalents: Large apple = 2 C. chopped,
Medium apple = 1 1/2 C. chopped, Small apple = 3/4
C. chopped
For some reason, I always thought that apple
dumplings were complicated to make. Just think of
them as individual apple pies. These are easy to
freeze, thaw and bake or reheat for an individual
sized dessert.
