COOK’S CHUCKLE
FINAL
THOUGHTS
NOTES
FROM NANCI
Whew – this has been one of
those whirlwind summers! Just like yours, I imagine. Now that I have
three teenagers and a very social 10-year-old, life just seems to be
flying by. I took Adam and Jenna up to Lake Michigan for a few days at
my aunt’s house near the Silver Lake Sand Dunes. In June, we had visits
from my sister’s family from Maine and my brother’s family from Alaska.
Big fun! When July hit, Adam and I were on a plane bound for California.
My seminar at the LaLeche League International Conference in San
Francisco gave us a great reason to take a few extra days and visit
family (I have family EVERYWHERE. Have you figured that out?). If you
haven’t traveled with a 13-year-old boy, you should try it sometime. I’m
still sore from riding the slides at the Fresno water park and rafting
down the river in Yosemite National Park not to mention the walk to and
from the spectacular 4th of July fireworks on Pier 39 (uphill both ways☺).
After catching my breath for a few days at home, I began to notice a
sharp increase in the amount of orders coming through the website. Tammy
was the first one to call and say “Hey, the article in Family Fun
magazine is great”. WOW! Great has been an understatement. A big
WELCOME! to all of you who have joined us as a result of that article.
Mary Purpura did a wonderful job outlining the thrills and spills of
freezer cooking. If you haven’t seen the article, pick up a copy at your
local grocery store. It’s in the September issue pages 88-97.
We’re also excited to be teaming up with Amana freezers for a fall
promotion. Participating local dealers will be giving away copies of our
Freezer Cooking Manual with selected freezers. Pretty cool, eh? Might be
worth buying a freezer just to get a free copy of the book☺
I am just amazed at the way this little “cooking thing” has grown. Our
web stats tell me that we are now averaging 1.2 MILLION hits per WEEK on
our site. Wow – can you believe that? Curtis tells me that we have over
750 pages on our site now. And that doesn’t count the message boards.
Last week our self-published cookbook zoomed to #280 on
Amazon.com.
If that doesn’t sound very high on the list, consider that
Amazon.com
has 4.1 million book titles for sale☺
This ranking also earned us a coveted spot on their Cooking, Food & Wine
Bestseller List. For about a week we were right up there with the big
wigs.
Our staff is growing too. I asked everyone to send me a photo so that I
can introduce them to you. Even though we are growing, we never want to
lose that “personal touch”.

team: Tammy, Curtis, Beth Ann, Christi, Carol, and Cindy. I
couldn’t do it without them!
We love hearing from all of you!

RECIPES FROM TAMMY
What makes a better snack
during these final hot humid days of summer than a frozen treat from the
freezer? Ice cream it is! I personally love ice cream! My kids will tell
you that if mom’s having a really bad day, we should go to Dairy Queen
for a Blizzard… that helps make any day better! Sad, but true!! So, on
with the recipes!
Homemade Ice Cream Mix
This is a family favorite recipe from when I was a kid. We had an
old-fashioned crank-handle ice cream maker. Making ice cream was a
family project… if you didn’t help crank, you didn’t get any ice cream!
We used to make ice cream on a Sunday afternoon in the winter. We had an
above-ground pool, and dad would take a corner of the cover off and hack
some ice from the pool to put in the ice cream maker. Now, when the
kids, spouses and grandkids gather at mom and dad’s in the winter, we
still make ice cream with that old crank-handle ice cream maker! I
personally have an electric ice cream maker, and it’s wonderful to
easily make ice cream whenever we want!
to view/print this recipe!
Hot Fudge Ice Cream Topping
I don’t know where I got this recipe from… it’s been in my recipe box
forever. It makes a tasty thick and rich sauce for on your favorite ice
cream. And is a nice change from using ‘normal’ chocolate syrup. I froze
this in small Tupperware containers… each container held about 1/3 C.
Depending on how much you use at a time, each container should hold 4-6
servings.

Chocolate Smoothies
I think everyone likes a Frosty from Wendy’s! Here’s an easy way to make
something similar at home. Or, a simple way to make homemade ice cream,
if you don’t have an ice cream maker. Check the “Comments” section of
the recipe for variations besides chocolate.

Ice Cream Sundae Squares
This versatile recipe is from my “Freezer Desserts to Die For!” eBook,
available from 30 Day Gourmet. It’s another one I’ve had in my recipe
box for a long time, but don’t know where it came from. There are lots
of options for variety, by using different flavors of ice cream and
toppings, and also different kinds of nuts… whatever your family likes!
(Note from Nanci: I’m eating one as a type this. Yum!)

of sheet protectors by now. Sure you can get them yourself at Office
Depot☺ but if you’re placing an
order anyway you may as well get them from us. They are 3 hole punched
and top-loading. No need to put holes in your recipes, just slip them

Not to confuse you or anything, but there are 3 ways to buy the ebooks
now:
-
A .pdf file that you download to your computer using Adobe Acrobat.
Nothing comes to your mailbox. No shipping charges. $6.95
-
That file along with a zip file with the ebook’s recipes to import to
your software. Again, nothing comes to your mailbox. No shipping
charges. $6.95.
If you get #1 and then purchase the software later, just e-mail me with
your name, the ebook you purchase and your approximate purchase date and
I’ll send the zip file with the recipes.
-
The ebook on CD. When you pop the CD into your computer, you will see
the .pdf file that you can print off and also the .rcp files to import
into the software. The CD comes in the mail. $8.95 + shipping.
The Ebooks on CD are selling like the proverbial hotcakes. They are a
bargain at $8.95. Every ebook comes with 5 pages of info on that
particular subject and 25 recipes. All of the recipes are freezer
friendly, multiplied out in 6 columns, and tested by our authors. The
CD’s include the software files too!

If you haven’t checked out our ebooks, we offer a free sampler of each
including the cover, the table of contents and 3 sample recipes to try
out. Check ‘em out!
eBooks Coming Up!
We have three new ebooks in the works and they will all be GREAT!
Chicken Recipes for the Freezer – Best of the Boards

choosing the best recipes from our message boards, multiplying them out
and organizing them into ebooks. Watch for Chicken Recipes for the
Freezer – Best of the Boards series soon.
Co-op Cuisine – Freezer Cooking for Groups
If you’ve ever thought “wouldn’t it be great to have a bunch of people
who freezer cook, give them each a recipe and then swap off the food”
you will LOVE this ebook. Jan has done all of the hard work – choosing
the best recipes, figuring out the “money part”, and setting the rules.
The 25 recipes are multiplied out by 10’s – perfect for group cooking!
Healthy Meals Freezer Cooking
You’ve been asking for this one for a LONG time. Lunches ebook author,
Carol Santee, is working on another winner. Great tips and information

CONTEST
WINNERS
Recipe of the Month Winner – Dreamsicle Pie from Linda Hoffland, of
Fennimore WI.
Let's meet Linda, our winner.
My husband and I are former dairy farmers. We
still live on the family farm, raising crops and young stock. We have
two daughters, 16 and 8, and a son that is 13. I work part-time for a
dairy equipment dealer and I am a Stephen Minister. In my spare time I
like to cook, rubber stamp, scrapbook and play cribbage on-line.
This pie is so easy to make, and cool and refreshing to eat. One doesn't
last long at our house. We use any flavor yogurt.
Thanks for sharing your great recipe with us Linda! Your prize-winning
check is in the mail! Congratulations!
Click here to view/print this recipe!
We used Mixed Berry yogurt to make it, and served it with some
strawberries I had frozen. I served it to company, and they all raved!
The best part about this dessert is that you can use a reduced fat
graham cracker pie crust, Cool Whip Free, and light yogurt for a
scrumptious dessert that doesn’t taste like it’s “light”! Try it… I’m
sure you won’t be disappointed!
Click here to check out some of the flavor combinations posted
by our cooks on the message boards.
I haven’t heard back from Linda L. yet, so we’ll have to meet her next
month. Linda L., if you read this, please contact me by email at
tammy@30daygourmet.com
to claim your prize. To submit your favorite freezer-friendly recipe for
the Recipe of the Month contest, post it under the appropriate category
on our message boards.
Submit your recipe for the Recipe of the
Month contest!
You too can submit a recipe for this contest! Just post it on our
Cook’s
Corner message boards under the appropriate recipe category. All
submitted recipes are considered, as long as your profile contains your
email address so we can reach you. The winner receives a check for $25.
CRAZY COOK’S STORY APRON WINNER – Lynn
from Tacoma, WA
Note from Nanci: This story was so funny to me because I was just
explaining to someone the cooking day phenomenon of planning to eat out
that night even though you have a freezer full of perfectly good food.
My most memorable cooking day came with a surprise ending. I think that
it was the second cooking day I had tried (I've been freezer cooking for
about a year and a half now) One of my abiding principles about this
whole thing is that I think that at the end of the day we should go out
to eat. I don't want to see anything I just cooked on a plate that
day...this does pass. On this particular day my husband went to Red
Lobster for take out for us. (He is a good man) As we all gathered
around the table in anticipation of this feast, my husband opened the
first bag. It contained a dozen cheddar biscuits....that's funny, he
didn't order biscuits, well maybe they come with the meal. We opened the
second bag...it also contained a dozen cheddar biscuits. As we opened
each of the six bags, they all turned out to be biscuits. This was
pretty bizarre. We called the restaurant. Apparently someone else was
expecting biscuits and went home with our meal. It was a good thing,
after a long tiring day, that my husband was the one who called the
restaurant. I listened as he said calmly, "I can't possibly tell you how
frustrated we are feeling at this moment. What can you do for us?" The
restaurant refunded our purchase, gave us two free meal coupons, and we
got to keep the biscuits. I OF COURSE froze them and they made a very
nice addition to our freezer meals. We will never forget THAT cooking
day!

"DO A GOOD COOKING DEED" $25 WINNER
This month's winner is
Shaleen W. from Round Rock, TX.
I'm known for my Freezer Food Fixing - love it so much and appreciate
you guys!!!
When a friend of mine was due with her fourth child soon and she was
overdoing it, I decided to get some freezer meals made for her. I shared
my recipes with her, had her pick out some she thought her family would
like (actually her husband picked them out), and then broadcasted the
idea among our circle of friends. Many wanted to help this struggling
friend of ours. Mostly, I wanted to have people come and help that
wanted to learn about freezer food fixing! The seven friends that could
come wanted to help with the food, so I assigned an item or two to each
of them.
I did the main shopping, spending around $100. We gathered one morning
and put together 40 meals in about four hours. It was a crazy time with
so many in one kitchen (not sure I'd recommend that!). I had each of the
friends pick a meal they would like to go home with. (They loved
learning the process and had a meal to try out on their families too.) I
was at the end of my cooking cycle, so with plenty of room in the
freezer, I froze the meals overnight. The next day twenty of the meals
went to our friend and some of the meals to other friends that either
just had a baby or were expecting soon. I think I ended up with four
meals for my family - bonus! It was a great way to teach people about
the process, help out those families that were in need and have a fun
morning as well.
Thanks for the newsletter and all the ideas. You guys are the best!
Shaleen

Magazine – Freelance author Mary Purpura wrote a great article about
freezer cooking in the September issue. Check it out! We are

be great if you would tell them how much you appreciated the article.

day – especially if you involve the kids! Rather e-mail? Send to:

Gourmet in an article titled “Solving the Dinnertime Dilemma” in the

Lots of our consultants and “regular” cooks are being featured in their
local newspapers as word about their “unusual” cooking plan spreads.

COOK'S CHUCKLE
I just spent another summer
NOT wearing those white jeans that I was going to get into by now. Big
sigh. That’s why I thought this was so funny when I read it. Enjoy!
For those of you who watch what you eat...... Here's the final word on
nutrition and health. It's a relief to know the truth after all those
conflicting medical studies. It seems we are all concerned with our
health. It's nice to have a friend who sent this so we can now stay
healthy.
-
The Japanese eat very
little fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.
-
The Mexicans eat a lot of
fat and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.
-
The Japanese drink very
little red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the Americans.
-
The Italians drink
excessive amounts of red wine and suffer fewer heart attacks than the
Americans.
-
The Germans drink a lot of
beers and eat lots of sausages and fats and suffer fewer heart attacks
than the Americans.
Conclusion: Eat and
drink what you like. Speaking English is apparently what kills you.

FINAL
THOUGHTS
Enjoy these
final days of summer. I know that I am. It’s a
Saturday as I type this. Bob is staining the back of
the house, Kaytee is “out” with a friend, Adam is
mowing the lawn, Becky is working on homework and
Jenna is playing “Bratz” in the living room with a
friend. I have a great family, good friends and yummy
food in my freezer (including the rest of those Ice
Cream Sundae Squares of Tammy’s). As my kids get tired
of hearing me say, “It doesn’t get any better than
this!”
Have a great month!
